Thunderstruck II Slot

Reviewed in July, 2010 | 0 Comments

A relatively new slot, released in May 2010 – this amazing slot deserves every single word of praise that I’m going to spout in this review.

In my view, Thunderstruck II sets the baseline for a whole new breed of slots. It’s engaging, understandably addictive and great fun.

Thunderstruck II is a 5-reel, 3 visible symbol slot which has 243 pay lines. In other words, don’t worry about the paylines because it’s all about getting the same symbols on adjacent reels rather than in a certain pattern.

There are two types of Bonus – The first is the ‘Great Hall of Spins’ which you enter by achieving 3 or more Bonus symbols on any reel. The second is the ‘Wildstorm’.

The Great Hall of Spins is a fantastic feature. The developers of the slot have made it so addictive because you have to play the slot more and more to be able to access different parts of it. This bonus has four different options. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th parts are only accessible if you have previously achieved 5, 10 and 15 entries into the Bonus. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to all be in one sitting – the slot remembers your progress (so long as you’re playing the same Casino!)

Getting into the Bonus can be high drama in itself, especially if your first two Bonus symbols arrive on the first two reels. The music builds up into an agonising prelude, making you try to use telepathy to get the next Bonus to appear! If it does come, the rewards are nearly always superb!

The Great Hall of Spins

The first option in the Great Hall of Spins is Valkyrie’s bonus, which will be the only option until you have entered the bonus more than 5 times. It’s not exactly shoddy but is fairly simple. You get 10 free spins at a 5x multiplier. Given it is not incredibly rare (at max bet of 300 coins) to obtain 5000 coins for a simple spin, having the 5x multiplier is fantastic and makes for some memorable moments. The best thing is that it can be completely retriggered with all 10 spins, with the appearance of 3 more Bonus symbols during the free games. It’s happened to me once, and I walked away with around 25,000 coins after 20 spins. I’ve seen bigger but not myself playing!

Loki’s Bonus is available from your 6th Bonus entry. It is my favourite of all the Great Hall’s options. Maybe it’s the music and the way a couple of the reels roll backwards as the free games occur, but either way, it has fantastic potential for payouts. The idea is that on the middle reel, two new symbols are available with the words ‘Wild Magic’ written in purple and yellow text. If, during one of your 15 free spins, the Wild Magic appears anywhere on that reel, a plasma like tentacle reaches out and makes up to 5 symbols wild, all under Loki’s watchful eyes, sitting above the reels (He has a vague resemblance to David Beckham don’t you think!). The ‘Wild Magic’ symbol also acts as a wild, so you can imagine how good it is to see a winning combination already dropped in, even before the ‘Wild Magic’ has its way. Truely brilliant fun to watch. I’ve been lucky enough to get the ‘Wild Magic’ symbol 5 times in 15 spins, but generally it’s once or twice and sometimes unluckily it’s not at all. Still doesn’t stop me from selecting this one though when presented with all four!

Odin’s Bonus is available from your 11th Bonus entry. You get 20 free spins but with a twist. Along the top of the reels are two brilliantly animated ‘Wild Ravens’. If you get a winning combination of symbols (no matter how small the win), one or both of the ravens will swoop down and make a random symbol wild, adding in a 2x or 3x multiplier in the process. To be honest, it’s rare to see both come down and do 3x, so don’t expect the world. But in so many cases, the one raven bridges a gap to another winning combination leading to a huge payout. The music is also captivating, and like the rest of this slot, the graphics are so rich you will want to play this over and over to over to try and will the raven onto the symbol you need to go wild!

Thor’s Bonus is the final Bonus option in the Great Hall of Spins and is available from your 16th Bonus entry. If you’ve ever played slots such as “Davinchi’s Diamonds” or “Dungeons and Dragons” amongst others, you’ll get the idea of how this works. Basically, you get 25 free spins, but effectively you get a lot more. Every winning combination pays out, and then blows up in a blue electric explosion, leaving room for more symbols to come down and potentially form a new winning combination. If they do, a multiplier kicks in – 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x, depending on how many times you have had a win in that free spin. I’ve never had it above 4x, so if someone knows if it carries on after 5x (i.e. it keeps giving you 5x wins rather than going on to the next free spin) that would be useful to know!

Loki, Odin and Thor’s bonus’s can achieve extra free spins with 2, 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols on the reels, giving, 2, 3, 4 or 5 extra free spins respectively.

Wildstorm

This is a very exciting feature which triggers completely randomly during normal game play. You’ll know it’s about to happen when the reels keep turning for longer than usual and you hear a distant thunder clap. The clouds descend on top of the reels and the word ‘Wildstorm’ appears. It is, again, fantastically animated as Thor jumps down on to the slot, has a look around and zips back up before making up to 5 (yes all 5) reels completely wild. I’ve seen it do 3 before, and if you’re incredibly lucky, it’ll be the first 3! Wildstorm is always a pleasure to see coming, but can be a dissapointment as I’ve literally got zero coins out of it when the random reel or two leads to no winning combinations. When it does win big though, boy does it ever! If you got all 5 reels wild, the payout is 2,400,000 coins. I’d love to see that screenshot!

Achievements

Thunderstruck II has generated quite a bit of buzz about its ‘Achievement’ system, whereby once you have scored a winning combination of, for example, 3 ‘A’ symbols, a message pops up saying ‘Achievement Unlocked’ and in your Pay Table, that achievement turns gold. As you can see in my screenshot, I have nearly unlocked the whole lot.

A word of warning though – it appears there is no magic huge payout for achieving everything. It is literally a way of keeping track of what you have and haven’t done. Various forums are showing threads from people scratching their head about this ‘feature’ and I have to agree. If you know differently, please let me know! It’ll be forever until I get 5 Thunderstruck symbols on the reels anyway!

It has been said there is also a special achievement for getting into the Great Hall of Spins 20 times. This isn’t true, as far as I can fathom. I have entered the Bonus around 40 times and not seen a single additional coin or feature.

Why this Slot is my favourite right now

You’ve got to see it to believe it really. Compared to its predecessor (Thunderstruck… dur!), it has moved into the 21st century with incredibly rich graphics, music and animation, let alone the great wins it seems to potentially provide! It’s Vegas quality and then some. Quite simply the most incredibly well produced slot there is currently in my opinion, it must have taken some serious work. If you’ve never played it, you’re honestly missing out.
