Leprechaun’s Luck Slot

Reviewed in September, 2010 | 4 Comments

Where to begin with this fun Irish themed slot? I have played this so much I feel like I’m constantly on the hunt for gold. More on that later. If you’ve played Rainbow Riches or other similarly themed slots, you’ll know instantly that this one will be full of your stereotypical Irish imagery (four leaf clovers, pints of Guinness, things being ‘lucky!’ generally!)

Fundamentally, Leprechaun’s luck is a 5-reel, 3-visible symbol, 20 line slot. Though on this one, you can’t select the lines, merely the stake you play.

In terms of wins-as-you-spin, it’s not the greatest. You’ll probably find you’ll win every few spins, but they’re never that massive, unless you hit a bunch of Guinness or Harp symbols (which pay the most)… a bell does ring if you get a ‘Big Win’, which I think the game defines as a win 10x your bet or more. However, it’s not really just about the ‘win spins’ as we’re going to find out now – this one has 3 fantastically quirky extra features.

Free Spins

You’ll know in my house when I’ve been dabbling on this one, I walk round for ages trying to impersonate the impossible-to-hate Irish leprechaun voice in this game, saying “Free Spins!”… he does it in a certain way and trust me, I get annoying after a while, even if the game doesn’t.

The Free Spins feature is activated by scoring the Free Spins symbol on reels 2, 4 and 5. I’ve noticed that 4 and 5 show up much more regularly than 2, so when 2 does come in (and you get a little Irish flute burst to tell you!), it’s quite often followed by 4 – and when that does, reel 5 spins like mad in the hope the Free Spins symbol will drop in. It’s very satisfying when it does.

The little leprechaun jumps out of one of the Free Spins symbols and pops up in front of the reels, blowing on his pipe. A number will emerge in the puff of smoke, which corresponds to the number of free spins you have been awarded. It can happen 2-5 times I believe, and the most I’ve got is 20. I don’t know if it goes any higher than that – someone let me know if you’ve done better. After finishing with his pipe, the leprechaun does a little Irish jig and starts locking in a few symbols (up to 4 I think) with Wild symbols. These are scattered across the reels fairly randomly it seems – the spins then start with a nice little tune going on in the background. All wins are x1, but you’ll get them pretty often if your wilds are a nice arrangement across several win lines. It can be great – I’ve won more than 200x bet on the spins, but only because harps filled up a good portion of the screen, it can be hit and miss but it’s great fun!

Progressive Jackpot and 2 ways to win

The progressive jackpot is visible at the top of the screen and is usually around the tens to hundreds of thousands of coins. If I hadn’t read that it had been won twice already this year (once at £235,000, the next time at over £400,000) I’d be skeptical that it’s possible, but twice in such quick succession is a great indicator of the added excitement you get with two other Bonus features – both of which you win extra money in either way.

Pot of Gold Bonus

If you’re lucky enough to land a pot of gold (it has ‘Bonus’ written on it to avoid confusion) across reels 1, 3 and 5, you’ll enter the pot of gold bonus whereby you click a button to pull a lever and just like Rainbow Riches, you move through a path (or in this case, light up a rainbow) to ever increasing multipliers of your stake. You start on x5 and can work your way up to x1000. If you manage to go one more step than x1000, you win the progressive. Believe it or not, I have got to x1000 once… from a 1 coin stake. I kicked myself because I’d just finishing staking 4 coins… so could have walked away with 4000! Another weird quirk it did to me was get stuck on the final spin, so I had no idea if I’d won the progressive until I closed the window and opened it up again – talk about tension! There is a comment on this review with a screenshot of my big win, which I remembered to do for once in my life! If you’ve had something good, add yours too.

I’ve played this bonus probably 10-15 times, and every time before that have scored in the region of x14-x60, so it was amazing to get x1000 – so beware, it might not be all it seems because I’m so enthused after that win!

The Wishing Well Bonus

This apparently triggers faily randomly on reel 3 (I don’t see it on the reel itself, but then it spins so fast it might well be there as just one symbol on a fairly big reel) – you’ll know when it’s going to drop in as the 3rd reel comes in really slowly, holding the rest up and some harpy plucking music starts up as it lands. The well only has to show up anywhere on the 3rd reel to put you in that bonus, and it all takes place without the screen switching elsewhere.

Your bonus is collected in a bucket which gets lowered down the well. Inside the well as you travel down are patches of earth which have amounts on – each time the bucket passes of those, that amount goes into your bucket. I’ve noticed sometimes the amounts have decimal points and sometimes they don’t – it appears you might be on for a slightly bigger win when they don’t have decimal points.

At the end of your bonus, you reach the bottom of the well – and if, sitting there, is a pile of gold, you win the progressive jackpot. I have yet to do that (not sure I’d be sitting here, I might be soaking up some sunshine somewhere if I had!), so I’m left with the leprechaun cheerfully saying “Where’s me gold?!” before the bonus ends.

Again, quite often as I’m leaving the house, I have overriding urges to start shouting “Where’s me keys? Where’s me fags? Where’s me can of coke?” – in fact they’re not urges, I do. And the other half hates me for it. That’s how brilliantly addictive this slot is.

Leprechaun’s luck is apparently exclusive to one casino at the moment, so you may not have seen it before – I say have a go (you can demo it for free), come back and tell me how you got on!

    Hi Lee,

Weird! I think the actual outcome is predetermined when you enter the bonus, so both of us were only ever going to get x1000. But now you’ve drawn the fact it’s no only me who’ve seen this, I’ll forward this page to William Hill and hopefully their software people can get it fixed.

What was the progressive at when you almost won it? 🙂

    Hi again Lee,

After a bit of explaining, I got this response from WH today:

“This email is with regard to a reported bug on the Leprechaun’s Luck Slot game in the Vegas site.

Thank you very much for sending us your feedback. We have passed it on to our Vegas Team and they have confirmed that there is a bug that causes the game to malfunction upon getting x 1000 and they are already working on getting a fix for this game. But regardless of the error, the game will still pay out correctly. ”

So there we go! Thanks again for your comment.
